i came across an older set of diffs with 4:56 out of a 1970 chev with a dana 44 front with drum breaks i was wondering if i can change the axals ring pinion carrier ect... in to the 1985 housing so i could use the disk breaks

The ring and pinion and carrier are all the same. A D44 is a D44... not positive on the axle length tho. Only thing is in 1985 chev used the 10 bolt, not a D44. Long as your sure its a 44 and not a 10 bolt your good.

yea im running the dana 44 now i was hopping to run them gears in this housing , i guess i could use my axals and spider gears with the 1970 ring and pinion and and everything should work..??

Yip... you shouldn't even have to change spider gears. Pretty sure the only difference is in the carrier. There is a carrier change somewhere around 3.73 (4.56's won't work on a carrier that had 3.08's)... so as long as you use the carrier that the gears you want are bolted to, you should be good to go.
