I'm not sure if its hp or not. I need to replace the 25 in my cj. A 30 out of a 77-78 is a direct bolt in I'm told with disks. I want to go with 33" or 35" tires so I'll need to put in chrome moly axles in it. My other option is to cut a 44. So i need to figure out would a 30 with chrome moly be as strong as a 44? The 44 needs a lot more work to install, probably out of my ability. I'm not sure if a 78 30 from a cj5 is hp or not.
Side note, do you know of any engine machine shops in the cbrm?

A late 70's CJ front end would be low pinion. If you are worried about breaking axles, just use a 33 that is skinny (33x9.5 etc). The skinnier tire has less weight and would be easier on axle parts. Another option is to swap a Dana30 from a Cherokee in. It would be high pinion(hp) and stronger than a low pinion CJ axle and a low pinion 44 in most cases. Later models (96+) use 297 ujoints (stronger). I have a spare 30 that is out back of my barn, you are welcome to eyeball it and get measurements etc. You'd have to change to leaf perches for your suspension, but not a real heavy mod

The 30 that I have is already set up for leaf spring suspension but something tells me the older cj's have low pinion passenger side pumpkins. Mine is drivers side so it wouldn't be much good to you. I would look for a 44 from an international scout with pass side drop or a 30 from a newer cj. A 44 would be much stronger if you plan to abuse it tho.
As for an engine machine shop in the CBRM... not sure. I know the radiator shop on Grand Lake Road can machine heads but I don't think they do blocks. You may have to send it up the line.

My bad. I forgot about the pinion drop. That's what I get for answering tech early in the morning. ;D

I may have an empty pass drop 44 housing from a 70's grand chearokee. If your interested i'll have a look to see if its still laying around. I'm pretty sure I saved it because it was a narrow housing.

I think a Rockwell in a cj3 would leave me with about 6" on each side of the pumpkin!
I do need a passenger side drop. A late 70's is a bolt in. I think the 44 would need about 4" cut off. It's definitely the better option. I think a that 44 would give me decent caster too. Let me know if you got it around.
Thanks for the 30 too, I'll going to have to decide which way I'm going.

Charles, do you still have that 44? I'd like to take a look at it if you do still have it around.
